The animals on the farm discover the goat is wearing a shiny red hat and are curious but the goat is not happy. He does not like hats but then it is not long before he loses the hat and there is chaos on the farm. The farmer’s wife tries to help but the animals are having such fun that they are soon chasing another hat.

There is a Turkish island called Bozcaada in the Aegean Sea. Our story of a baby swallow takes place there. Her name is Eke. She has left the nest earlier than planned and got stuck in a narrow backstreet on the island. She is unable to fly. Her parents are with her and trying to persuade her to fly. Her brother is looking for her everywhere on the island. While they were thinking that the island was a heaven for them, they found themselves all of a sudden in big trouble.

We will see what’s happening to Eke throughout the book. Will she be able to fly to join her family? How about the island cats? Did they hear that there was a little bird in their reach? What are her parents doing to help her? How is she feeling?

What you need to know:

Harold, the thinking donkey, is a thoughtful story about resisting injustices and being kind to others. An important message is how moral attitudes are conveyed with the knowledge and use of a wide vocabulary, and therefore of how vital the importance of reading is becoming in a world of emoji mobile dialogue and poor literacy.

Young minds can be easily influenced, and persuaded about many things, but sometimes they need to resist the persuasion of peers trying to take advantage of any intolerance leading them into quick judgements, for by encouraging their tolerance they cannot be so easily persuaded, and will begin learning to think for themselves.

Footprints in the Snow

“What’s that sound?” Katrina gasped, snatching at her friend’s sleeve.

“Oh, nothing really,” Mack answered casually. “Just a bird.”

But the animal that jumped out in front of them on the path was definitely not a bird – it was a mountain lion! Mack and Katrina stared at it in bewilderment, vaguely wondering what was going to happen next. The children had already been startled out of their wits, so when the creature stepped closer, snarling and growling ferociously, they just turned and hastily scurried away.

As he stumbled blindly along, Mack felt a warm spurt of blood suddenly trickling down his arm, but he ignored it in the great hope of reaching home safely before the mountain lion could make another swipe at one of them. Mack expected the vicious animal to attack him from behind at any given moment. Then he became aware that the noise had faded slightly…

Could the mountain lion be stalking them silently? Risking a momentary glance over his shoulder, what the frantic boy saw only made him run even faster than ever – the wild animal was still giving chase!
